An Open Letter to Harold Camping

Mr. Camping,

It is high time for repentance.

You, sir, are a Coward, hiding out, not showing yourself or giving an account- calculating your next move for self-preservation.

You stated in unequivocal and dogmatic terms that May 21st was to be the rapture of the true believers and the beginning of 5 months of torment and tribulation to those remaining as they perished by the millions daily.

You impatiently and ungraciously scolded any caller to your Open Forum radio broadcast that dared to ask the big "What if..?" question, that is "What if you're incorrect?" What then? What about all those you led, if not only to give Family Radio inordinate amounts of their soon-to-be-useless money, but to make other rash and extreme decisions.

Oh, I know-- You couldn't possibly be held responsible for what these folks were led to do- after all, they're adults and the fault lies entirely with them- right?  Wrong!

The Scripture warns-- Let not many be teachers for they will incur a stricter judgment!

You have brought reproach upon Christ and his people as well as the Bible!

Now it's time for you to demonstrate that you are the "man of God" you would have us believe. You see you were wrong. You were not infallibly led by the Spirit of God to "unlock" the still remaining mysteries of Scripture, and certainly we see clearly what we already knew-- that it is not for any man to know the day and the hour of the Lord's return- you were not graced with that prophetic office although you took it upon yourself. Now "pay the piper" and do what honor requires.

Your obligation if you are truly, (albeit wrong and disgraced), a "man of God", is to repent as far and wide as your error and sin has caused hurt to Christ's church and His people. It's time for you to come out of hiding and repent. Your hiding is an evidence of your cowardice.

A man of God should and would under these circumstances at least call a press conference and face the heat such actions have caused. You need to declare that you were not only wrong but that your preoccupation for the last two decades of seeking to know and declare the date of Christ's return was evidently not a calling of our Lord upon your life, and not attendant with the approvals of God.

Most people declare you to be a false prophet. Some would like to charitably allow you to escape such an indictment by making the distinction that only a person claiming to have received "new" extra-biblical revelation ostensibly straight from God's mouth (who then turns out to be wrong in their prophecy) can be rightly called a false prophet. In my opinion, what you have done for the last almost 20 years is more akin to that of a true false prophet.

You cleverly avoided coming right out and saying that you were God's last prophet but everything you did and taught said differently. To say that God would unlock His mysteries to the "true" believers alone and then to use Family Radio's far reaching airwaves to set yourself up as the one-and-only exegete to have been blessed to understand and have his spiritual eyes opened by God to decipher such mysteries... well, the only conclusion I can draw is that you were speaking for God, at least that's what you thought in your strong delusion.

Despite your insistence that "many" others have come to your same conclusions independently, the truth is these "others" are only disciples of your specific teaching and those who except your unorthodox hermeneutical method of Bible interpretation. I have yet to find a single corroborating clergyman or scholar who simultaneously agreed with you and declared these same conclusions based on their own independent study, uninfluenced by your "research".

What must God do before you repent?  A man in Africa hung himself in a church due to your prognostications, another woman in the U.S. slit her two daughters throats and then her own in anticipation of the end of the world you declared, by God's grace alone they survived.  We won't get into the countless millions that were spent by your disciples either by their donating directly to Family Radio or by efforts of their own to spread the news of your prediction, that could have been spent on efforts that God would have certainly found more ready to bless. Efforts that led people to the Savior.

It's high time to repent!  Man-up!  Show your face.  Hold a press conference and publicly recant and repent.

You may have a semblance of humility in your manner but the truth is you are an arrogant and unteachable man with no respect for authority or the collective voice of Christ's church.  I know for a fact that men of honor have repeatedly attempted to exhort and correct you over the years and have all gone away frustrated by your utter unwillingness to even consider their advice or warnings to you. You are your own measure. To you, all these men because they continue in their respective ministries within the corporate church, are now either Satan-filled or Satan directed, certainly not led by the Holy Spirit of God to address such errors as they see in you.

I will continue to pray that God perchance may open your spiritual eyes as you have for so long exhorted your listeners, (at least those who had not yet gulped down your particular "Kool-Aid").

In the meanwhile, I anxiously await your public repentance and efforts to use the remaining assets of Family Radio to restore those you have harmed. It is time for your Board of Director's to repent along with you.  You should all resign and have an independent committee oversee the ministry with a mind to hiring those who have proven faithful in Gospel ministry.  If you need help with that, you can contact me and I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.

If you and your Board do not publicly repent and use your stewardship at Family Radio to make some tangible efforts at restoration to those that have been hurt by your ministry then my prayer would be that God might be pleased to take you all out of the picture in whatever way He pleases.

The time is indeed short and the days are dark, as they have been since the Apostles so described them, and so it is high time to wake out of your sleep.  This is no time for you to continue in a failed ministry.  Sadly, I recall a time when you knew what truth was and what the Gospel was and still had respect for God's church and his servants, but that was a long time ago and your turn toward heretical doctrines and practices needs to be arrested.

May God have mercy on you.
